Studies performed by WorleyParsons examined the application of sediment transport theory to a complex real-world problem through the use of CFD modeling.

The Bondi Sewage Treatment Plant effluent by-pass channel is used only for emergency discharge. However the channel has a tendency to accumulate significant volumes of sand and other sediments, compromising the discharge capacity of the channel.

The CFD analysis was carried out to gain a greater understanding of the wave processes occurring in the channel, to identify mechanisms for the accumulation of
sediments in the bypass channel and establish a methodology for the assessment of proposed remedial actions.

Visualization and understanding of the flow allowed the geometry of the system to be optimized. This led to lower flow losses, and an increase in power generation.
